Maritime transport world-wide is facing a major two-fold challenge: an ever increasing dependence of the world economy on international shipping, alongside the need to protect the marine environment as well as constantly decreasing tolerance of errors and deficiencies in ship safety.

With “safer shipping and cleaner oceans” as the ultimate goal of the International Maritime Organization, WMU – which is IMO’s apex educational institution - has built a reputation as the leading education and research institution in the area of maritime safety and marine environment protection over the last two decades. WMU’s programme in maritime safety and environmental management is unique. The programmes offered by the university have been developed with rigorous academic standards and, at the same time, incorporate the latest developments in maritime safety and environmental law and regulations, cutting-edge maritime technologies and the state-of-the-art management expertise.

With a strong faculty, the leading position of WMU in maritime safety and environmental management is further strengthened by the close relationship WMU enjoys with the world maritime community in general and with IMO in particular. The World Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University share a long and close cooperative relationship. The two institutions have worked on a number of joint projects over the last 23 years. The WMU-Dalian programme reflects our mission, extends our strengths, and responds to the demands of the world maritime community.

Maritime transport world-wide is facing major two-fold challenge: an ever increasing dependence of the world economy on international shipping, alongside a constantly decreasing tolerance of the errors and deficiencies in ship safety and the protection of the marine environment.

Having been founded in 1909, Dalian Maritime University (DMU), is now the only key maritime institution under the Ministry of Communications, People's Republic of China. It enjoys high reputation for maritime-education and training in the country and around the World. Our mission statement is to be steadfast, rigorous, industrious, pioneering, and to build the University into the first-rate maritime university in the World.

Our University is honored to be among the few maritime institutions recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as being "internationally renowned for their academic excellence". It plays and important role in international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Association of the Maritime Education and Training Institute in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP). The joint MSc Programme by both WMU and DMU in maritime safety and environmental management marks a new mile stone for the two Universities.

Nowadays, with the globalization of economy and education, and with the expanding international sea trade, the demand for well-qualified professionals in maritime sector is constantly growing. Meanwhile, along with the rapid development of the world shipping industry, maritime safety and environment protection has become one of the key issues and draws much more attention worldwide.

In response to this trend, WMU and DMU initiated this joint programme which is characterized by three aspects: technology, law and regulations, economics and management. This three-pillar programme intends to equip the students with advanced technological, legal and managerial skills which will be needed to enable innovation and improve performance in their future career.

After the sucessful launch of the 1st class in March 2005, the recruitment of the 2nd class students has started. I am very pleased to see.that this joint programme will provide more well-qualified professionals to meet the soaring needs of the shipping industry, and it will also further strengthen the tie between WMU and DMU
